May 2019 Book Club Pick: Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward

Come join us in May as we continue our book club! Next up, our May book club pick is Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward.

Thanks to everyone who participated in our April book club discussion of The Fifth Season by N. K. Jemisin. We loved hearing what everyone had to say.

If you’re just joining us, welcome! Rachael and I are so excited to have you with us. If you are looking for a community of readers, you’ve found the right place.

Not everyone has a chance to be in an in-real-life book club. So why not join with us. Let us be your community. Let’s discuss books together and make some friendships along the way.

Each month we’ll pick we think you’ll love. On the first of every month, we’ll have a post just like this one, explaining why we choose the book we did. Then, about a week later, we will post discussion questions. Hopefully, our discussion questions will prompt us to go deeper. Not just “I loved it or I hated it.”

Near the end of the month, we’ll update our discussion questions with our viewpoints, and open up the post for your comments.

Let’s read together with intention. Let’s build a community of readers and have lots of fun along the way. Come join with us!

Why We Chose Sing, Unburied, Sing

With Time, New York Times and even President Obama singing its praises, this National Book Award winner quickly caught our attention. Though an eye-catching cover certainly didn’t hurt, either.

We chose Sing, Unburied, Sing for our May book club pick because we want to dive into an award-winning book. This month, we hope to sit down with you and ponder the deeper meaning novels can portray.

What sets apart a critically acclaimed book from its contemporaries? How do legacies of racism, violence and prejudice affect people today? Is adding a mystical element worth the sacrifice of realism?

Hope you join with us this month for our May book club pick. We fully expect a lively discussion. Remember rule #1 of the Pingel Sisters Book Club – you are not required to like the book we pick. Differing opinions are always welcome!

Let’s Discuss Sing, Unburied, Sing

Here’s how it work. You read the book, we pick the questions, and then we have a fun conversation! Here is our May book club schedule:

May 8th – We will post our May book club discussion questions so you have a chance to reflect on them before our discussion begins.

May  22nd – Let the discussion begin! For the last week of May, our discussion questions will be open for comment. We will update the post with our thoughts, and would love to hear what you have to say about Sing, Unburied, Sing.
